Abortion - More Harm than Good

Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow - 7/28/2009 6:30:00 AM

A survey shows increased recognition of the harm of abortion.

The poll conducted by Marist College suggests that over half (53%) of the American public believes abortion does a woman more harm than good. Georgette Forney of Silent No More says that is because more hurting women are opening up to loved ones about their abortion experiences. "We're the norm. We are women who have had abortions and then come to a place -- sometimes the day after, sometimes 20 years later, sometimes 30 years later -- when we realize that we didn't just have an abortion like you have your tonsils out, but that the abortion took the life of our child," she contends. Forney says at that point women begin to deal with the grieving and the emotional scars abortion causes. She notes that sometimes the pain emerges in forms of detrimental behavior, alcohol and drug abuse, or even nightmares. She points to a feeling of never being able to atone for the guilt -- and recommends women in that situation visit her organization's website for help. The Marist poll indicates that 26 percent of respondents believe an abortion improves a woman's life.

Nurse Forced to Help Perform Abortion

Josh Friedeman, the Millennial Perspective
In what may be an indication of what the future holds for nurses and doctors who are ethically opposed to abortion, Catherina Cenzon-DeCarlo - a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital in Brooklyn - was coerced through intimidation and inaccurate information to assist in the performance of a late-term abortion although it was against her religious convictions.

According to the New York Post:
The hospital even exaggerated the patient's condition and claimed the woman could die if the nurse, a devout Catholic, did not follow orders, the nurse alleges in a lawsuit.
"It felt like a horror film unfolding," said Catherina Cenzon-DeCarlo, 35, who claims she has had gruesome nightmares and hasn't been able to sleep since the May 24 incident.

The married mother of a year-old baby was 30 minutes into her early-morning shift when she realized she had been assigned to an abortion. She begged her supervisor to find a replacement nurse for the procedure. The hospital had a six-hour window to find a fill-in, the suit says.
Bosses told the weeping Cenzon-DeCarlo the patient was 22 weeks into her pregnancy and had preeclampsia, a condition marked by high blood pressure that can lead to seizures or death if left untreated.

The supervisor "claimed that the mother could die if [Cenzon-DeCarlo] did not assist in the abortion..."
[Cenzon-DeCarlo] said she later learned that the hospital's own records deemed the procedure "Category II," which is not considered immediately life threatening.
"I felt violated and betrayed," she recalled. "I couldn't believe that this could happen."
A native of the Philippines, Cenzon-DeCarlo moved to New York in 2001 and started at Mount Sinai on the East Side as an operating-room nurse in 2004. During her job interview, an administrator asked Cenzon-DeCarlo whether she'd be willing to participate in abortions. She flatly said no. The nurse said she put her beliefs in writing.

The day after the procedure, Cenzon-DeCarlo filed a grievance with her union. Later that week, she was cornered by two supervisors who told her if she wanted any more overtime shifts, she would have to sign a statement agreeing to participate in abortions, the suit says.
The next month, Cenzon-DeCarlo was assigned to one overtime shift, rather than the eight or nine she usually received, the suit claims.
And to think, this is only one small example of a problem that will surely get worse if the government continues to gain control over the healthcare system.

In the search for truth about the effects that abortion has on you, this book has taught me so much. I shared what I have learned about the Stages of Grief. It also shows you where you need healing, the characters of God, scripture to show you God's Truth, questions to help you realize the pain you need to deal with and list post-abortion ministries to check out. The book is very easy to read and opens your eyes to the truth about abortion and how to deal with the emotions.

Acceptance: Last Stage of Grief

By now, you have forgiven those who hurt you and have accepted God's forgiveness. You have acknowledged all the emotions that go with grieving and you have faced them head-on.You begin to show gratitude for all that you have learned and want to share that experience with others. In acceptance, you are fully aware of what God is doing with your pain and watch joyfully as He turns it into a blessing. You have a deeper understanding of God's plan for your life. You wait patiently as He shows you how this painful experience with grief fits into His perfect plan. Is this a process that you would want to repeat? Absolutely not. But, if you learn anything, learn that it was God's love, grace, mercy and forgiveness that brought you through it all. You learn the true meaning of being forgiven and set free, even when you didn't deserve it.

Depression: 5th Stage of Grief

The roles men and women played in their baby's death can fill them with guilt, shame, self-condemnation, and self-pity. It is in this stage that harmful behavior such as excessive drug and alcohol use or suicidal tendencies are noticeable. Men tend to also have to deal with becoming more aggressive and abusive. In this stage, you may feel the need to punish yourself, which may show up in psychosomatic illnesses or you may become accident prone. Through these behaviors, you may attempt to ease the pain of guilt, but fail to do so. You began to blame yourself for not preventing the abortion; not learning the truth in time, not choosing life for the baby, and for not standing up for what was right. Men who chose abortion experience extreme guilt because he failed in his responsibility to his child and to his child's mother. In moving forward out of depression, you are no longer angry with yourself but have now accepted responsibility for what you have done. You now start to surround yourself with God's loving forgiveness.
